For those who wonder if cannabis use can affect a person’s memory, the answer, like many things, is somewhere between “yes” and “no.”

According to Brendan Bures writing for Fresh Toast,  Canadian researchers Scot Purdon and Daniel Krzyzanowski wanted to get a better understanding of what long-term cognitive effects cannabis could have on users. In a review that appeared in the journal Neuropsychology, they analyzed 23 previous studies to determine if marijuana abstinence had any impact on verbal learning and memory abilities.

Based on the literature they surveyed, they found that it appears that whatever impairment marijuana use inflicts upon memory and verbal learning can be resolved with  “between 7 and 28 days of sustained abstinence.”

So, Bures suggests if you’re cramming for an exam or need to remember a presentation, it’s probably best not to use marijuana a day before learning the information. And, if you’re ever worried your cannabis use is causing you to become forgetful, a week or so of abstinence is likely to reset your memory—and with it the name of your third grade teacher.

Dollars and Sense

Two recent stories, one from Michigan and one from Las Vegas, demonstrate that when given the chance consumers continue to support legalization—and they do it with their dollars.

In the case of Michigan, Kathleen Gray, writing for the Detroit Free Press, reports that in just the first six weeks of operation, Michigan’s legal marijuana shops sold $10 million worth of marijuana products. Given that the state places a 10 percent excise tax and a 6 percent sales tax on marijuana, those sales resulted in  $1,675,014 in tax revenues for the state.

In  Las Vegas, the Planet 13 SuperStore reported it had more than 1 million visitors in 2019. Those visitors accounted for revenue of approximately $63 million with customers spending an average of $90 per person each visit. The Planet 13 SuperStore is said to account for close to 10 percent of all dispensary sales in the state of Nevada.

In an article that appeared in Yahoo! Finance in 2019, Bob Groesbeck, Co-CEO of Planet 13 told Javier Hasse, “In the highly competitive Las Vegas market our SuperStore stands out because we offer visitors much more than the top brands of cannabis products—we have focused on making Planet 13 a tourist destination by providing customer experiences and unique entertainment features.”

Celebrity Spotlight

Two more celebrities—one from the world of music, the other from the world of sports—are among the latest entries into the cannabis marketplace.

In the first case, GRAMMY-winning guitarist and longtime cannabis advocate Carlos Santana has announced his partnership with Left Coast Ventures to develop premium cannabis and hemp CBD brands.

According to an article prepared by PR Newswire and posted by Melissa Schiller in Cannabis Dispensary Magazine, the brands developed for this venture will be designed to “honor Santana’s heritage while incorporating his divine philosophies by identifying strains and products that promote the spiritual consciousness and wellness effects of cannabis.”

Said Santana, “Cannabis is a window or a door to different awareness of consciousness. It gives you the choice to perceive through a different filter of awakening and healing, the misperception of distance as an illusion, which keeps you from being centered in your essence-core. It helps you arrive at knowing, accepting and owning a quality of life that is being with joy!”

Oye Como Va indeed

The other celebrity endorser, 2016 FIFA Women’s Player of the Year Megan Rapinoe, has teamed up with her twin sister Rachael at Mendi, a new CBD brand that offers edibles, gel capsules, and topicals designed to help athletes recover. Rachael Rapinoe is the company’s cofounder, and Megan Rapinoe serves as a sponsored Mendi athlete and brand ambassador.

In late 2019 Megan Rapinoe told Nick Dimengo, writing for Green Entrepreneur, “CBD is a natural alternative that has helped me stay at the top of my game for several years now, whether that be regulating my sleep, relaxing on long flights, helping with inflammation, or recovering after hard trainings and games. Bottom line, it’s natural, and I don’t want to be filling my body with chemicals. I eat clean and train hard, so I want my recovery process to be as natural as possible.”
